Thank you!

My presence on social media has largely been about Medicine. It’s been an incredible avenue to network with a broad array of people (largely in healthcare) who share similar and differing views. It’s also an incredible way to advocate for issues you strongly believe in.  For the most part , these issues have been mainly related to problems in our healthcare system.

I never intended to veer too far from Medicine in my social media life. But sometimes, it’s important to get out of your comfort zone to stand up for what’s right.

Over the past few days, I’ve been humbled by the outpouring of support on Twitter for my tweet below.

“Hey @realDonaldTrump here’s my #MuslimID I take care of your sick, regardless of race, religion or creed.”

I merely intended to show my support for @MuslimMarine.  But more importantly, I wanted to show support for the millions of Muslim-Americans and honestly ALL Americans who are just normal people who every day find ways to make positive contributions to society in the face of rising xenophobia and political vitriol that threaten everyone’s way of life while shattering the principles upon which this country was found.

A detractor of my tweet questioned why I used the word “your” suggesting I had separated myself from the people I care for, and implying I did not consider myself to be an American.

The truth is, the inspiration for my tweet comes from the following quote found on the Statue of Liberty

“Give me YOUR tired, YOUR poor,
YOUR huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of YOUR teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed, to me:
I lift my lamp beside the golden door.”

Emma LazarusEmma Lazarus

This is what I try to do a little bit each day at work.

This is what my institution I work for does everyday.

This is what millions of American’s feel in their hearts.

This is also at the heart of what it is to be Muslim.

This is as American, as America gets.

Thanks again to everyone and look forward to continuing the dialogue that sets this country and world on a path to peace and prosperity.
